Titbits

Well, let's see, it's been a riveting few weeks for the staff here. We had a dandy of a time at Dayton Music Fest, and to all of you who came and felt the aural wrath of the Motel Beds and the Smug Brothers, we thank you.
-Make sure to catch the FREE show this Saturday with the Motel Beds, Me & Mountains, and Okay Lindon, the latter two, swell up and comers that we think are neato mosquito and give our full yet meaningless endorsement. It'll be a bloodbath of completely heterosexual grown men playing heartfelt pop/rock music...While the overall supply has been almost completely depleted, there's still a handful of free Motel Beds CD singles that'll be given out. Another order has been placed for more, so in a couple of weeks, feel free to pester us if you didn't get one, we'll be glad to hook you up.
-Mr. Joe Anderl will be heading back into Fictional Studios to work on his third consecutive project with production merlin, Derl (Motel Beds, Smug Brothers, Peopleperson, Big Baby, etc.). We're excited.
-The latest Peopleperson download only single "Gateway Person" is still available (scroll down a little bit), and the next Peopleperson long player "The Fuck That No One Gave" is officially in the can and will be pressed up here within a couple of months. This is the one. Peopleperson hits a pocket of perfection here. It just keeps getting better. There's a couple of preview tracks on the myspace page.

-We can't say enough about our new friends Swimmingpool the Band and think you should check it out and make sweet friends with them.
-The brand new release from Werewolf Police
will be up very shortly.
-Last but certainly not least, the Smug Brothers vinyl LP Fortune Rumors is right around the corner. In the meantime, the Interior Magnets CD single is still available from Squid's Eye Records. And finally, watch out for Smug Brothers supporting Swearing at Motorist's only US appearance at Canal Street Tavern on Oct 29th.

Smug Brothers join the Squid's Eye family

In 1979, TASCAM introduced the Portastudio 144, the first 4-track cassette recorder and the music world was never the same. The relatively inexpensive multi-track home machine was used simply as a demo device by many rumpus room rockers, but other acts, from Bruce Springsteen to Ween, realized they could create inexpensive, intimate albums with these easy-to-use machines.
Thirty years later, Smug Brothers, a home-recording outfit from Dayton, Ohio, is still benefiting from this once emerging technology, now considered by many as an analog throwaway in a clean, digital world. However, it is this warm cassette foundation that gives this group’s pop-rock songs a timeless feel.
Started as a recording project in late 2004, Smug Brothers initially served as an outlet for Kyle Melton (Mascot/Area Code) and Darryl Robbins (The Motel Beds/The Dirty Walk) beyond their now-defunct Dayton outfit, Montgomery Greene. Working alone together over the next year, Melton and Robbins recorded Smug Brothers’ debut, Buzzmounter, which was self-released in Fall 2005.
Reconvening in early 2008, the Smug duo enlisted home-recording veterans Don Thrasher (Guided By Voices/Swearing at Motorists), Marc Betts (Montgomery Greene/Busted Lovers) and Jason Short (Montgomery Greene/Snake Oil), and began working on a more expansive sound. The results are a series of short, catchy songs that cannot be denied. Some call it manna from pure pop heaven for the short-attention-span set, we call it the first new item on every discernable listener’s must-have list.
According to John Wenzel of The Denver Post, Smug Brothers create a “juicy, mid-fi mix of dense power-pop and indie rock. Think a less elfin, more propulsive Tobin Sprout fronting a late ’90s Merge band and you’re close. … this is some catchy-ass stuff.” Although initially constructed as a full-length album, Fortune Rumors was broken out into the Fortune Rumors EP series, a free download initiative released through Fictionband and The Buddha Den in Spring 2009. The digital E.P.s began to quickly generate an internet buzz, resulting in positive reviews in blogs at DaytonDailyNews.com, DenverPost.com and others, and radio play at WOXY.com and non-commercial broadcast outlets such as WYSO-FM (91.3) and WWSU-FM (106.9).
“Every two weeks the band has been giving away a free digital EP consisting of 3 to 4 catchier-than-the-swine-flu pop songs,” wrote Dayton Daily News music blogger Kris Neises. “(These are) fresh-sounding and perfectly crafted lo-fi indie-pop songs that are packed with hooks from beginning to end. It is so good, I feel guilty that I got it for free.” The E.P. series also caught the ear of Squids Eye Records’ head Tony Gilbert. Smug Brothers joined the ranks of the illustrious Dayton label in April 2009. Look for the Interior Magnets single and Fortune Rumors album, both coming summer 2009.

Peopleperson featured on ROCK IS DEAD
"What we got here folks is a mega-ton blast of Dayton Ohio's own peopleperson. Conjured up creations from one man band recording guru Derl Robs. Peopleperson's music comes straight outta left field in the musical spectrum. Just in case you forgot what I said about this project before in my previous post, I can best describe the music as Melvins meets Davie Allan meets Mermen meets Sonic Youth meets Link Wray. [All instro by the way] At least that is the way I hear it. While some songs range from 6 to 7 minutes, most are just over a minute or two. Heck even some are just 30 seconds long. Derl's art direction tends to lean on artsy indie rock side which isn't really my bag, but like a true fan of good music I can easily overlook this flaw. Robs has some very unique ideas when it comes to writing killer riffs. I've often wondered what this dude would sound like with a full band backing him up. The guitar work is very powerful, and demands your total attention with it's heavy fluid droning assents, and dives. I also recommend that you slap on a pair of your favorite headphones, lean back in comfortable chair, close your eyes, and let the music drift you into a world your not all that familiar with. Looking for something different well this is it."

Another fantastic band from the 90's that not enough people got to experience. They played at the Palace Club if you can believe it....to about 15 of us. It was great, one of the better shows I remember seeing at that place.

Peopleperson - Flavor Country

From last year, Peopleperson's Flavor Country. The same sensibility yet from a different angle. Imagine Peopleperson dropped into the open ended and succinct Minutemen template of songwriting, and that gets you real close.

Caregiver

From 2007, the Caregiver debut LP. In the town he calls home, Caregiver stands completely alone, there's just no one else doing this kind of thing. Imagine 1975 Tangerine Dream with a rock drummer. Superior fuck music.

Back as fuck

Well, we're so, so painfully sorry that we've not been around as much as usual. Sometimes a guy just has to turn his attention to other non fictional based activities. Basically, during this time of the year, Fictionband Landscaping gets really busy with leaf removal jobs.
The good news is that there's an awful lot on the horizon, so your life is soon to be filled with dandy new treats. Lucky you. There's new shit on deck from Peopleperson, Joe Anderl, Big Baby, Smug Brothers, and believe it or not, new things coming from the Motel Beds.
First up is a chewy sweet pop chunk from Werewolf Police of Connecticut. You'll love it.

Brainiac/Bratmobile 12X12 split
Brainiac/Bratmobile live split single here. More than likely, recorded at Brookwood hall in 94ish maybe? I think there's better live Brainiac recordings out there, but this is still great. Ahh, Brainiac. Here's the thing. Yeah, they looked great in those little shirts, yeah, they were probably the best live band Dayton will ever produce (particularly after they had the first solid chunk of touring under their belts), yeah Tim's Moog and electronic additions were always amazing and (at the time) fresh. It's the songs. You can strip all that other stuff completely out of the scenario, and the songs still stand. Tim had a clear talent for constructing songs that translated flawlessly live, just as well as they did on record. Without the songs, you have nothing, and this is what separates okay bands from great bands. If you were there to see it all, you should be thankful. If you weren't, you should be severely depressed.

Fresh Fiction
Welcome to our new home. Kick back, relax, chill your favorite bubbly, invite over your favorite dame, and let the cool freshness wash over you like a California sunset while one of the slower Eagles songs plays softly in the background. What can we say? This looks better, feels better, makes our tedious lives easier, and is, well...free. Fuck all that website noise. We're still working to make the move complete, so there will be some time to get all the fur covered furniture into this new spot. Just hang tight, as if you've got anything else to do with your life.

TITBAG!
"Before Titbag, no one seriously thought of Tard metal as actual art. That all changed when Gordie Titbag created an undeniable work of art which remains, after 30-plus years, one of the most influential albums of all time. From Gordie's evocative word/sound pictures (the trippy "Theme from Titbag", the carnival-like "Titbag Odyssey") to Gordie's Eastern-leaning "Silly Titbag Songs", and the avant-garde mini-suite, "Tagged and Titbagged", Full Belly, Empty Balls was a milestone for both tard metal and popular culture."--Phil Ruddman Rolling Stone
That sums it up. We really have nothing to add to that.

Cigarhead 12X12 cassette
Cigarhead. A beyond excellent Dayton band that not enough people got a chance to see/hear. To this day, this one's a personal favorite. Off the top of my head, Jeremy is now in the Human Reunion, and Sheldon now plays drums for Accidentally on Purpose. I don't have a clue about Gose and Tom. Cigarhead 12X12 cassette part 1

Motel Beds - Lost Beds LP
Without a doubt, and whether you know it or not, the Motel Beds are one of the finest bands Dayton Ohio has ever produced. We're happy to hook up the one and only "Lost Beds" bootleg LP. This fucker is over an hour long, and to the best of my knowledge, you're not going to find these tracks anywhere else.Lost Beds part 1
Lost Beds part 2
Here's a really nice, fairly recent live clip of the lads.
